Putin is unpredictable and could use nuclear weapons, Navalny’s widow warns

The widow of the deceased Russian dissident Alexei Navalny has warned of the unpredictability of Russian President Vladimir Putin and said the possibility that he could use nuclear weapons at some point cannot be ruled out.

“We don’t know what to expect from him,” she told dpa. “He probably would.”

She compared the question to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying that at the time she did not expect Putin to attack given the strong ties between the two countries. “But he decided to do it. He scares people, keeps them in fear. No one knows what Putin will do next.”

Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 after illegally occupying Crimea in 2014.

Navalnya said she was not sure whether Putin really has a “strong strategy.”

The Navalnys were for years the most prominent opposition activists in Russia.

Navalny, a long-standing and staunch opponent of Putin, died on February 16 in a prison camp in Siberia’s Arctic Circle. It has not been independently determined whether the 47-year-old died of natural causes, as his death certificate states. However, his supporters say he was murdered.

Navalnya also commented on the recent arrests of several suspected Russian spies in Europe, saying this is a further sign that Putin has long been waging war in the heart of Europe, using all necessary means.

“Putin didn’t just start, he’s been doing this all the time. He starts wars, he kills his opponents,” she said, adding that their presence is no surprise to her. “I always assumed there were a lot of Russian spies in Europe: Russian spies, that’s clear.”
