Elmira native Johnny Beecher scores in NHL playoff debut, sets tone for Bruins victory

Less than three minutes into his NHL playoff debut, Elmira native Johnny Beecher registered his first playoff goal.

Beecher’s wrist shot off an assist from Jesper Boqvist on a two-on-one breakaway 2 minutes, 26 seconds into Game 1 of the opening round of the Boston Bruins’ playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night at TD Garden in Boston .

The goal set the tone for a 5-1 Bruins victory. Boston added three goals in the second period to go up 4-0.

Beecher’s night also included three shots and six faceoff wins in nine opportunities.

This is the rookie season for Beecher, who was drafted by the Bruins in the first round of the 2019 draft after playing collegiately at the University of Michigan. In 52 regular season games with Boston, Beecher had seven goals and three assists.

He also spent time this season with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League, where he played seventeen games and registered four goals and four assists.
