Jim Weiers, former Speaker of the Arizona House, dies at age 70

James “Jim” Patrick Weiers, former Republican speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, died Friday at the age of 70.

His brother, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, released a statement Friday evening.

“While Jim’s life was more than his service to the state, I ask for those who knew him in this context that you remember and celebrate Jim’s service to our great state and his exemplary leadership as former Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives,” said Jerry Weiers.

Jim Weiers was born in South Dakota in 1953 and moved to Phoenix in 1965. He was elected to the Arizona House in District 10 in 1994 and served in the Legislature until 2013. During his tenure, he served as Speaker of the House twice. .

He is survived by his wife, Gina, four children, twelve grandchildren, his stepmother, JoAnne Weiers, and four sisters.
