Kansas carjacking suspect injured in shootout with police

SHAWNEE COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Topeka.

Just before 2 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a citizen report of an armed robbery in the 2700 block of SE California Avenue in Topeka, where a vehicle was forcibly taken, according to police spokesperson Rosie Nichols. The suspect was said to have been armed with a firearm and was behaving erratically.

During the investigation, officers received additional citizen calls with information about suspicious sightings. With the assistance of several citizens, responding officers were able to locate the suspect in downtown Topeka. Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect who ran away.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., in the 500 block of SW 16th Street, the suspect fired a weapon at the pursuing officers, causing the officers to return fire in self-defense. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his life-threatening injuries.

No police officers or others were injured in this incident.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation will take over the investigation. Per the policy, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation into the incident continues. Police have not released the suspect’s name.
